5¢ Architecture

"It’s no secret that architecture has been hit by the recession (yes, even that impenetrable bastion of technical wizardry, jargon, theory, and - oh nevermind). 27-year old Seattle resident John Morefield can attest: he was laid off not once, but twice in a single year as projects dry up and small firms tighten budgets. So what’s a boy to do? Watch Peanuts cartoons and hang out at the local farmers’ market?

"Why yes indeedy. Morefield’s concept for Architecture 5¢ — edificially inspired by Charles Schulz’s psychiatrist booth for Lucy — is bringing architecture to the people, and people to the architecture. For a nickel, passerby can ask questions that range from simple (”What’s the best insulation to use next to concrete in a basement?”) to complex (”We have a 700-square foot Seattle bungalow and want to add a second story because we’re expecting our first child… Help!”)."

[full story on flavorwire]

As an aside, there's an architect I'm working with on a new school at the moment. In meetings he makes sound effects as he sketches the ideas being discussed. It reminds me of the animation sequences from Rainbow. It tickles me every time. More people should soundtrack their lives like this. (Skip to 2:30 in the video if you don't have a clue what I'm on about.)

Self Help
I saw a trailer on Channel 4 last night for the show Make Me a Christian. I found the idea of this repugnant. OK, so it may be fairly well balanced and may turn out to show the pros and cons of Christianity equally. But to be truly fair, shouldn't they be running Make Me An Atheist along side it?

The argument that you shouldn't take belief away from people, only give it to them, is weak. There are alternatives and people should be told what they are. For example, it should be explained that the morals we collectively live by are not necessarily of biblical origin, as religious people assume they are. People should be given the information and allowed to think for themselves.

Maybe a strand in the format of How to Look Good Naked could be replaced by How to Think for Yourself? It doesn't need to present any conclusions, it just has to present the evidence that one side of the argument would prefer you didn't see and give the other side a chance to respond. I wouldn't expect it to change society in any way, but it should be done nonetheless.

The Shining Redux
Channel 4 recreates The Shining to promote its Kubrick season
[video]

"Channel 4 has painstakingly recreated the set of Stanley Kubrick horror film The Shining, complete with look-a-likes of the crew and cast members including Shelley Duvall, for a TV ad to promote a More 4 season of the director's films.

The 65-second promotional spot has been filmed as a one-take tracking shot through the recreation of The Shining set.

It promotes the season of 10 Kubrick films to be broadcast on More 4 from July 15. Jon Ronson's documentary, Citizen Kubrick, will air ahead of the start of the first film."
